On the hunt for a conveniently situated outdoor space? You’ll find it at Carrier Park, which allows you to make the most of the great outdoors without leaving Asheville. This beautiful park borders the French Broad River, which is visible from many of its paths. Home of the Asheville Mellowdrome, this popular site has transformed from a dirt racing destination to a pleasant community space.

Today, Carrier Park provides a blend of leisurely and athletic activities. As one of the city’s largest parks, Carrier provides plenty of space to explore. Lawn bowling, roller hockey, volleyball, and a wide range of other opportunities allow visitors of all ages to enjoy themselves as they get their daily dose of exercise.

Located right off I-26, the park is easy to access. Few restaurants are available within walking distance, but the park’s facilities make it an ideal destination for picnicking. Clean restrooms are available onsite, as are fountains and a variety of other amenities designed to make the park pleasant and accessible.

A few of our favorite activities and amenities include the following:

Walking Trails
Nothing beats a leisurely stroll or a less leisurely job along the beautifully maintained paths of Carrier Park. Whether the trail is populated by runners or walkers, you’ll likely say hello to at least a few friendly individuals along the way. Be sure to check out the many educational plaques that provide insight into local wildlife.

Basketball Court
Show off your love of the game at Carrier Park’s basketball court, where you can regularly find locals playing pickup games or simply shooting hoops. This is just one of several sports that regularly take place at the park. Depending on when you visit, you may also spot people playing touch football or ultimate.

Playground
Let your kids release excess energy at the park’s playground, which features sturdy wooden structures capable of keeping young visitors entertained for hours on end. Wooden cars and castles encourage kids to use their imagination as they play. Feel free to take a seat on one of the benches aligning the playground and watch your children as they make new friends.

Velodrome
Often referred to as the MellowDrome, Asheville’s velodrome is conveniently located within Carrier Park. Originally a dirt racing track, the facility was donated to the city several years ago and now is open to cyclists of all levels. Recently renovated, the velodrome now offers plenty of banking. Its race track history lends a special feel to every excursion on two wheels.

Dog Park
Not only is Carrier Park a delight for kids and adults, it offers plenty to keep canine visitors happy. The park’s open fields are perfect for energetic dogs. Several stations are available to help you up your pet’s waste. Most visitors take advantage of these stations, thereby leaving the fields clean — there’s no need to worry about unwelcome surprises under your shoe.

Sometimes, the simplest activities are the most enjoyable. A leisurely walk through Carrier Park could be all that is needed to put a smile on your face. The park’s other activities are worth pursuing as well; if you take advantage of all this Asheville gem has to offer, you could be in for a full day of outdoor fun.

Insider Tips:
– While ample parking is available throughout the park, it can get crowded quickly during the weekend or in the evening after locals get off work. When in doubt, arrive early — and don’t be surprised if you have to walk for some time to reach your intended destination within the park.
– If you intend to throw a party, consider reserving the pavilion for private use. While this space is generally available, only a reservation will guarantee that you and your loved ones enjoy full use of the space.
