Old Forge Distillery

Old Forge Distillery: Moonshine and Spirits With Spirit
Local Expert's Rating:
5.0 / 5
The Bottom Line:

If you're even remotely into spirits, the Old Forge Distillery is a must-see (and must-drink) in Pigeon Forge. Moonshine isn't for everyone, but at least this is a stellar example of what it's supposed to taste like. The only drawback: this is a spot for adults, so families with kids will have to split up or find something else to do.

The Old Forge Distillery is a must-see for anyone on the Tennessee Whiskey Trail or interested in history. The distillery building is 100 years old, and it used to be a farm supply store. Today, it’s right next to the Old Mill, where grain is ground with stone. The Old Forge Distillery uses grain from the Old Mill to craft delectable alcohol using mountain water, honoring the distilling traditions that have been floating around Tennessee for generations.

If you want to sample moonshine, this is the spot to do it. Do a tasting at the tasting bar when you go, because the people who work there are very knowledgeable about spirits in general, and the Distillery alcohol in specific. Hear the origin stories and brewing techniques of what you’re drinking and learn what flavor notes to look for as the liquid hits your tongue. Flavored moonshine in French Toast, Coffee, and Chocolate, is also available. By the way, the Old Mill Creamery uses Old Forge Distillery moonshine in some of its treats!

The interior is rustic and charming. You’re likely to see burlap sacks laid over tablecloths and a lot of wood accents and exposed beams. By the way, the moonshine for sale comes in mason jars. It’s called 1830 Original because it uses old Tennessee moonshine recipes and techniques combined with modern knowledge. Cool, right? It’s worth buying one jar just for the novelty. If you don’t like moonshine, give it to one of your friends as a Pigeon Forge souvenir.

If you’d like to take a tour, you can arrange one with the distillery ahead of time. Tastings don’t need to be pre-booked.

Insider Tips:

-Moonshine is just one of many spirits available here. Rum, vodka, and cream liqueur are also available. Branch out and try a few options when you visit so you can get the full effect of what the distillery has to offer.
