Located in the heart of Gatlinburg, Bones BBQ Joint is a fun and casual place to dine. Their atmosphere is relaxed, the location is easy to get to, and the food is great. It’s a good place to take the family or to have a night out with your friends.
Bones decor has a rustic feel to it. With wood floors and wood paneling throughout, you’ll feel like you’re out in the forest rather than in a restaurant. There are multiple TVs placed around the dining room, so you’ll be able to catch a game from just about anywhere you’re sitting.
There is a large sitting area at the bar, where anyone can sit, with a great view of a huge flatscreen TV. The bar doesn’t have an overwhelming supply of alcohol. They have a few beers to choose from, but that’s about it. There is also another bar sitting area across from the main bar, but this one doesn’t have a bartender or drinks behind it; it’s strictly for seating.
Bones is not a traditional restaurant where you’re seated and then served. When you walk in, you’ll make your way to a counter where you’ll see the menu written out on a chalkboard overhead. You’ll order at the counter, get your drinks, utensils, napkins, and anything else you may need and find a table you like. When your food is done, it’ll be placed in a pickup window, and your number, which you are given when you order, will be called so you’ll know it’s your food that is ready to eat.
Bones will be the first to brag on how they’ve mastered the art of cooking meat, and considering they’ve been working on it for four generations, they have a right to. The meat at Bones is tender, and falls apart in your mouth. Bones menu is full of smoked specials. Here are some of the ones we’ve tried and love:
- Pa’s Four Combo Dinner: Although it’s one of the more expensive items on the menu, the amount of food is worth the buck. You’ll get your choice of four meats out of beef, chicken, pork, ribs, and sausage along with two sides and hushpuppies. This feast will give you a big taste of the delicious meats served at Bones.
- Pulled Pork Sandwich: You can’t go wrong with a classic pulled pork sandwich, and at Bones, they have mastered how to make it. The pork is super tender; top it off with your choice of sweet, mild, or hot barbecue sauce, which you’ll find already at your table, and you’re set.
- Fried Pickles: They may only be an appetizer, but they’re worth mentioning. You won’t be able to eat just one of these pickle chips. They’re super addictive, and you may just decide to get a second order and eat that as your meal.
The staff at Bones isn’t overly friendly, but since they only take your order and call your number, it really isn’t that big of a deal. They are very knowledgable and informative if you have any questions. You keep up with your own fountain drinks, napkins, etc…, so you should always have everything you need.
Bones has an outdoor area with a fire pit and heaters where you and friends can enjoy each other’s company by some relaxing flames. The fire pit is turned on day and night, so enjoy it anytime you go.
Insider Tip: There is a gated parking lot directly to the right of bones. If you park there, take your ticket inside to have it validated, and get your parking for free. You can park there for up to two hours if you’re eating at Bones.
