Yes, we know you’ve heard and read it before. It seems like every travel and vacation destination has at least one. It is that “Must See” destination. For those heading to Pigeon Forge, it may just well be the Moon Pie General Store and Original Book Warehouse. This is a 25,000 square foot collection of unique gifts, books, t-shirts, stuffed animals, candies, replica vintage signs, crafts, and, of course, everything “Moon Pie” a visitor could want. Your first impression is likely to be “Oh My!” and your biggest challenge may be knowing where to start your visit!
This shopping attraction has over a dozen departments plus a literal “bargain basement” of treasures and treats to explore. The star of the show, however, is the famous Moon Pie. Moon pies trace their history to over a hundred years ago when a salesman for the Chattanooga Bakery was visiting a company store for coal miners. He asked the miners what type of treat they may like and they responded by telling the salesman “something good and filling”. Back at the bakery, the salesman noted some workers dipping graham cookies in marshmallow. He put two of the cookies together in a sandwich, had it coated with chocolate, and the Moon Pie was invented. The miners loved it and it has become legendary in these parts. Today, there are seven flavors of moon pies which are an even more special treat when combined with RC Cola. Mix and match your favorite flavors when visiting. The Moon Pie General Store is headquarters for everything Moon Pie. Here you can find a wide selection of Moon Pie T-shirts, bears, mugs, cups, clocks, and cookie jars and tins. If you can imagine it, and a Moon Pie logo can fit on it, it is probably here. Be sure to have an old fashioned Nehi Soda Pop while visiting.
Of course, the co-star here is the Original Book Warehouse, it is divided into multiple departments. Check out the new releases and best sellers. There’s a terrific selection of Christian Books and Bibles, regional books, cookbooks, children’s books, fiction, and tons of closeout books to explore.
The Moon Pie General Store and Original Book Warehouse are about more than moon pies and books, however. A visit here is to that of a time and place that moved at a slower pace. There are games, puzzles, and toys from Melissa and Doug. There’s home décor, gifts for just about everyone, and even quilt supplies. Spend an hour or spend the day.
