The Bottom Line:

If you're looking for a fun atmosphere to enjoy some mexican cuisine favorites, and you can deal with prices that are slightly overboard and think watching people ride a mechanical donkey while chowing down on a chimichanga sounds like fun, then Loco Burro is definitely a great choice for you or your family.

Known for their world-famous Margaritas and Fajitas, Loco Burro is a Gatlinburg must for any fresh-mex fanatic. Located in the heart of the Gatlinburg strip on the second floor above  Johnny Rockets, Loco Burro’s bright storefront signage makes it easy to find(it’s the one with the donkey in the logo). Complete with a full-size mechanical donkey and a modern-themed rooftop patio with a great view of the Gatlinburg strip, Loco Burro is a great place for families or individuals looking for a good time.

The bar area downstairs is populated with a mixture of comedic wall signage, as well as incredible bar stools that resemble a donkey’s hind legs, while the upstairs bar area is an open roof with a more modern, upscale approach to their furnishings and decor. Both replete with plenty of visual appeal, the interior design was executed very well as a perfect compliment to their obviously light-hearted and fun brand.

Though there are mixed reviews over the level of service by the wait staff, our experience was generally positive with a minimal wait time and a friendly server. Like most traditional Mexican restaurants, the chips and salsa were delivered to the table promptly after we were seated! Normally this would have turned me off, but Loco Burro’s unique blend of herbs in spices in their tomato-based salsa was the perfect compliment to this Mexican restaurant staple. Needless to say, we had to ask for seconds.

Overall food preparation was done well. The tacos were prepared to perfection with a warm crisp corn shell, lettuce, tomato, Mexican cheese blends, and in my case, Mojo Pork. (Shredded Chicken and Seasoned Beef are also available). Served with “Fresh-Mex Rice” and Beans, the sides were average, but there wasn’t a lot of room left anyway after filling up on the yummy chips & salsa and delicious tacos.

The fajitas, unlike the tacos, were a flavor experience that might leave you needing a little taste bud therapy. Even though their fajitas are supposed ‘world famous’, our experience was that the chicken was dry and the beef was a little charred. To be fair the flavor was quite delicious overall, but the texture and poor preparation of the meats in this Mexican standard left us disappointed for the higher price tag.

Insider Tip:
If you’re a fan of cold salsa, then you’re in for a bit of a surprise. The salsa that comes with the chips is actually warm! If you wish for cold salsa, ask for a recommendation for something else.
