In the Alps, Swiss Bear Haus would be described as “gemütlich”: welcoming, cheerful, and cozy. But you don’t have to travel to Switzerland to enjoy the comforts of this 4-bedroom lodge. It’s located right here in Gatlinburg, within 10 minutes of downtown and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The cozy charm is evident as soon as you step into Swiss Bear Haus’s great room on the main floor. The wood-planked walls, floor, and cathedral ceiling, the stone-surround fireplace, the vintage ski gear adorning the walls, and the lantern-style fixtures above the dining table give the space a one-of-a-kind allure. The roll-arm sofa and the generous armchairs provide plenty of seating for watching a movie on the flat-screen TV with cable, catching up with friends over après-ski drinks, or playing Uno with the kids. Swiss Bear Haus also has Wi-Fi for your convenience.

Just behind the sofa is the handsome dining table, and behind that, the large, beautifully equipped kitchen. Even if you normally avoid cooking while on vacation, once you see Swiss Bear Haus’s kitchen you’ll be eager to prepare a full-fledged feast. Along with stainless-steel appliances, cookware, tableware, and ample counter space, the kitchen boasts such niceties as a copper farmhouse sink and open wood shelving.

Downstairs is a 2nd living area, furnished in the same luxe-lodge fashion as the great room. There’s a fireplace down here too, along with another flat-screen TV and more comfy seating. When you’re not sprawled out on the leather sofa reading or napping, you can challenge the others to a game of foosball. If even foosball sounds too exhausting, step out onto the deck and into the hot tub. As many as 4 people can luxuriate among the steamy jets of water at the same time.

Swiss Bear Haus has 4 bedrooms, each as delightful as the next. The primary bedroom includes a lofty king-size bed; the other 3 each feature a queen-size bed. All 4 bedrooms feature a flat-screen TV for late-night viewing. The log-style and carved-wood furniture, the toasty patchwork quilts, and the vintage and artisan accents give each room the feel of a private retreat. Should you have additional guests, the sofas in the great room and the downstairs living area open into beds for 2, so that Swiss Bear Haus can sleep 12 people in total.

The 2 bathrooms, like the rest of the chalet, marry old-fashioned charm and modern-day convenience. Each includes a combination shower/tub and a vanity made from a traditional dresser—ensuring plenty of storage—and topped with a copper basin. When you arrive at Swiss Bear Haus you’ll find plenty of clean towels for both bathrooms, all the beds impeccably made up, and extra bedding ready and waiting. Leave your towels and linens at home; in fact, feel free to pack lighter than usual, as the house has its own washer and dryer.

When you visit Swiss Bear Haus in summer, you can take advantage of the community swimming pool. And any time of year you can take advantage of its convenient locale. As mentioned above, in 10 minutes or less you can drive to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or to downtown Gatlinburg, home to thrill rides, distilleries, arcades, mini golf, restaurants, shops, and more. Equally close is Ober Gatlinburg Amusement Park and Ski Area, which offers skiing and snow tubing in winter and ice-skating, amusement rides, and an animal attraction year-round. (If you do visit us in winter, a vehicle with 4-wheel drive or tire chains is strongly advised.)

A one-of-a-kind getaway begins with a one-of-a-kind place to stay—a place like Swiss Bear Haus. Book your stay today, and get ready for your best vacation yet.

Beautiful but cold

The house was beautifully decorated, however the nights we stayed the temps were in the teens and the whole bottom floor including two bedrooms were unusable due to the fact the heating system only warmed upstairs. That was disappointing considering everyone had to pack into the two rooms upstairs and I on the couch bed . Also the home offered no firewood or welcoming info. It would have been appreciated to have a list of local places to shop or what to do. I thought that was pretty standard now days. The upstairs tv would not work. Overall while the house was beautiful it did not work for our family because of the above mentioned .

Our 6th Anniversary

Impeccable sums it all up. It was 4 couples all together and we really didn't have to go anywhere to have a good time. This cabin was everything. Great job staff on preparing such a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Pros and Cons

The property was beautiful. The location was prime! There needs maintenance at the property especially the upstairs porch. The hot tub has no privacy from your neighbor, who was outside two nights at the same time as us. It was very difficult to get the house the same temperature, upstairs was warm while downstairs was COLD. There are plenty of extra blankets! We did light a fore but the entire downstairs filled up with smoke, the upstairs was the same way, had to open the door to keep smoke out. Yes vents were open but chimney may need to be cleaned! Lack of seating at table for amount of guest they accommodate. Plenty of appliances, dishes and everything you need for food prep, a huge fridge with lots of room.

Beautiful home on very steep hill

The house was beautiful inside but when booking I wish I knew if the area was more secluded. I envisioned a more private location where the kids can play outside. Instead the houses are really close together on a very steep hill. Not kid friendly at all. Very close to Ober Gatlinburg which was a plus. Water pressure was really bad and sometimes no hot water at all.

A beautiful house, a relaxing stay

The house is beautiful! The rooms are very generous, and so wonderfully decorated! Every item was thoughtfully chosen. All the furniture, beds and pillows were so very inviting and so comfortable. The bathrooms were wonderful. The number of bathroom towels was great. The sheets and comforters and blankets and throws were marvelous. The TVs were great - every bedroom had them as well as the two living areas!! The lighting - lamps and overheads, were fantastic - every single room. The fans were wonderful. The A/C was great! So were the washer and dryer - very convenient!! The only problem I had was with the kitchen. The appliances (fridge, stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffee makers) were marvelous. The the sink was glorious! My problem was with the pots and pans. One pan was burned beyond use, another was scratched so much, it was unusable due to concerns with food contamination - they should be thrown out, and replaced. It was a shock when I took them out to use. We overlooked the oh so many chips on all the dinnerware, and were upset that broken glasses were left in the drawers, instead of being thrown out. I realize that if Corelle was used, unscrupulous people would be taking it, so we overlooked the chips and used everything (and we also brought paper plates). As a homemaker for nearly 50 years I was personally disappointed with the lack of storage space for grocery items. Of course we plopped everything in the corners of the counter (which was a beautiful piece of granite) and made do. A huge disappointment was with the missing and broken pieces on the foosball game. It was totally unusable. Everyone was upset with that. On the other hand, the family members who used the hot tub were so very happy with it!! The other items I had problems with were: The confusion with the notes on the refrigerator and the emails I received. I had to make calls regarding the door code, the WiFi, and the pool. Everything was handled very professionally, and every hurdle was crossed by management. The pool folder needs to be updated. We used what we thought were the passes, and were informed that they were 2 years old. Another call was made, and that time no answer came through. When we got back to the house, we found updated passes in the back of the drawer - not in the folder. I don't know whose responsibility this is, but it needs to be remedied. I believe everything (paperwork and emails) needs to be looked at, and coordinated for a streamlined and easy entrance and stay. We saw bears 4 times. Once while driving into Gatlinburg, and 3 times the morning we were packing to leave - they came wandering into the driveway. Luckily everyone outside was able to scramble into the house quickly!! It was a lovely, and relaxing stay. I heartily recommend it to all adults.
