Happy Jack’s is as unpretentious as it gets. Tucked between several fast food and chain restaurants, this charming establishment is often glanced over by those who favor fancier outings. But if you skip Happy Jack’s due to the location or the lack of glitz, you’ll be doing yourself a huge disservice. Stop in at the chill Asheville restaurant and you’ll find welcoming vibes and down-home cooking that will remind you of your grandma’s favorite recipes. Visitors refer to the interior style as “old Pizza Hut,” but there’s a certain type of charm in this type of venue.
Service is invariably quick and friendly; if you’re in a hurry you can get in and out, but you’ll also feel comfortable sticking around for a leisurely meal.
Specializing in classic breakfast and lunch recipes, Happy Jack’s emphasizes a made-from-scratch approach to cooking. Many of the ingredients are local; all eggs are cage-free. Dishes tend to favor carnivorous types, but several meat-free options are available for vegetarians. Vegans should probably dine elsewhere.
If you arrive in the morning or simply need a caffeine boost, don’t forget to order a cup of coffee. A common Happy Jack’s boast: “If better coffee existed, it would be on our menu.” The restaurant also serves a small selection of alcoholic beverages, including craft beer, wine, and mimosas. If you’re feeling ambitious, order the 16-ounce Monster Mimosa.
A few of our favorite menu items include:
Big Jack Combo
Treat yourself to a classic, protein-filled breakfast. This versatile meal comes with three eggs prepared as you desire, plus your choice of grits or home fries, biscuits and gravy or flapjacks, and three ounces of bacon, ham, sausage, chicken, or hamburger. Portions are notoriously generous at Happy Jack’s, so only order the Big Jack Combo if you feel capable of downing a lot of food. Otherwise, the restaurant offers several Lil Jack Combos.
Meat Lover Open Face Omelet
The meaty goodness of this unique omelet is immediately visible thanks to its open face style. This hearty omelet includes applewood bacon, pit-smoked ham, and hickory nut sausage. As with the Big Jack Combo, you can choose biscuits and gravy or a flapjack, plus grits or home fries. The omelet is also served with white cheddar and Ms. Betty’s Fresh Salsa.
This simple lunch entree is bound to satisfy. Served on wheat bread, it includes turkey, bacon, ham, white cheddar, tomato, romaine lettuce, and mayo. None of these ingredients overpower — they’re carefully balanced to ensure the perfect sandwich eating experience. Choose your favorite side to complete the meal; options include fries, chips and salsa, potato salad, and fresh fruit.
In the mood for a classic cheeseburger? Order one at Happy Jack’s. You’ll be pleased by the 90 percent lean beef, the trademark Happy Jack’s white cheddar, and the other toppings: tomato, onion, romaine, and pickle. This burger pairs perfectly with home fries.
Both lunch and breakfast entrees are satisfying, but when in doubt, order breakfast — it’s Happy Jack’s claim to fame. Either way, you’ll enjoy a delicious meal and positive vibes.
-Visiting Happy Jack’s is a joy, but it can also be your way of making a difference for those less fortunate. The restaurant supports the non-profit organization Kevi Bears Kids, which provides dolls and balls for impoverished children.
Happy Jack’s owner Kevin Lee explains that, while he was often hungry as a child, he always forgot his troubles when he played sports. During a visit to Ecuador, he felt compelled to give soccer balls to local children. At the time, he was only able to provide eight balls, but it was a transformative experience nonetheless.
Want to help the cause? Keep the change you save on your affordable meal out and deliver it to Happy Jack’s during restaurant hours. Those on staff will be happy to direct your tax-deductible donation to Kevi Bears Kids.
