The Asheville pizza scene is thriving, so there is no shortage of places where you can score a mouthwatering pie. When you want something truly special, however, you’ll head for Barley’s Taproom and Pizzeria.

At Barley’s, you’ll find distinct pizzas that don’t look or taste quite like the other pies in Asheville — or really, like anything you’ve tried before. The restaurant’s pizza is self-described as “New York-style” but it has its own local charm that you’ll really appreciate.

This location represents just one piece of a successful chain that has attracted enthusiasts in Knoxville and beyond. The Asheville location is special, however, as it represents the original Barley’s. It is situated in a former appliance store and retains much of the down-to-earth charm that made it feel so homey from the get-go.

Pizza is available by the slice or as 14-inch pies — perfect for splitting on date night. The toppings are delicious, but the crusts deserve all the attention: this is what truly sets these pizzas apart. The magic of the Barley’s crust stems from the use of sourdough, which creates an amazing aroma.

Nothing elevates a great pizza quite like craft beer, and, like any ‘typical’ Asheville restaurant, Barley’s provides plenty of opportunities to enjoy an excellent brew. Several regional selections can be found in the downstairs bar, including favorites from the Pisgah Brewing Company and local legend Highland Brewing.

This Asheville hangout offers more than delicious pizzas and brews, although those alone make any visit worthwhile. Beyond this, however, Barley’s promises an entertaining experience, complete with pool tables and darts at the upstairs bar.

A few of our favorite menu items at Barley’s Taproom and Pizzeria include the following:

Panzanella Salad
This flavorful Italian bread salad is loaded with grape tomatoes, red onions, arugula, Kalamata olives, and more. House balsamic vinaigrette adds an abundance of flavor. As with all Barley’s salads, marinated grilled chicken can be added if desired. Feel free to order this as a half or whole salad.

Mortadella Panini
Served on brioche toast, this delicious sandwich is packed with Italian-style bologna, plus smoked mozzarella, arugula, Dijon mustard, and even peach preserves. While many Barley’s sandwiches are available as half orders, you’ll want to be hungry for this one — it can only be ordered as a whole sandwich.

Calzone
Available with a variety of toppings, Barley’s calzones are wrapped in the restaurant’s signature sourdough crust but also include plenty of mozzarella and seasoned ricotta. Marinara is provided on the side. This is a sizable calzone, so consider splitting it with a friend.

Greek Pie
Perfect for vegetarians, this delectable pizza has an olive oil base, plus mozzarella and feta cheeses. Kalamata olives, artichoke hearts, grape tomatoes, and red onions provide plenty of flavor.

Barley’s All-American Pie
Featuring a red sauce base, this tasty pizza is meant to be devoured. Featuring red sauce for the base and plenty of mozzarella cheese, this favorite is generously topped with pepperoni, Italian sausage, mushrooms, roasted red bell peppers, and onions.

Whether you crave sourdough pizza, craft beer, or a lively atmosphere, you’ll find a lot to love about Barley’s Taproom and Pizzeria. Discover the hometown appeal of the Asheville location.
