You’re probably not accustomed to getting anything tasty let alone healthy from a drive through-window. But then you haven’t been to AVL Tacos & Taps. This quirky drive-through restaurant serves a variety of tacos, burritos and other Mexican-inspired foods through the dual windows of a building on Merrimon Avenue. You can also get growlers filled with locally brewed craft beers or six packs of Asheville Brewing Company’s favs.
There’s a lot to like at AVL Tacos and Taps. The service is quick and friendly, and the menu includes plenty of delicious tacos and burritos, each perfected with homemade sauces like pineapple pico de gallo or roasted pepper baja. While the meat options are quite tasty, we love the “No Evil Foods” selections. Made with plant-based proteins, these tacos are uber flavorful and a nice change of pace for vegan fare. (The barbecue tempeh is basically a bahn mi tofu taco.) You can also get side orders of tortilla chips with fresh guacamole, cheese queso or salsa.
Oh, and the beer. Get your growlers filled from a rotating selection of Asheville Brewers Alliance beers, or pick up a six pack of an Asheville Brewing Company favorite. Customers can use their own clean growlers or buy one from AVL Tacos and Taps. Available in 32- or 64-ounce sizes and emblazoned with a luchador mask, they’re as much a conversation piece as a beer delivery system.
While there’s a lot to be liked about AVL Tacos and Taps, there is a downside. Since it’s only a drive through, there’s no place to sit indoors. There is a small outdoor dining area with a few picnic tables, but it’s only usable during the warmer months. Plus, the ambiance on the side of a busy street isn’t ideal. We’ve also noticed that some reviews say the food here is expensive when compared with other taco shops in Asheville. We didn’t find that to be true. At least to us, two house tacos and a large drink for $6.79 seems like a pretty good deal.
Our favorites at AVl Tacos and Taps included:
Buffalo Cauliflower Signature Taco
What do you get when you wrap crispy cauliflower, mild buffalo wing sauce, blue cheese crumbles and chipotle ranch dressing together in a soft tortilla shell? A little bit of heaven, that’s what. This taco is not as spicy at AVL Tacos’ buffalo chicken taco, but it still packs a flavor punch.
Plantain House Taco
Don’t be skeptical about this one. It’s simultaneously sweet and savory with grilled plantain, pico, chipotle sauce and black beans. Admittedly, it sounds a bit different, but trust us, you’ll drive back around for a second taco after you try it.
Talk about a fun way to eat a taco! A small bag of Doritos or Frito corn chips is filled with seasoned ground beef, sour cream, cheese and lettuce. Eat this masterpiece with a fork so you (hopefully) avoid spilling it all over your car.
– If you’re not in the mood for tacos and just looking for beer, one of the drive-through lanes is dedicated to beer purchases. That means you don’t have to wait one second longer for your bottle to be filled with your favorite local craft brew!
